Why can I not access my favorite local station while driving but I can when I'm on WiFi?

Modified on Wed, 22 May at 3:31 PM

Radio stations use IP addresses to determine a listener's location. Since your Tesla-provided internet package does not provide you with an IP address with your actual location, you will receive restriction messages while listening to some stations. This would also explain why you can play the station on other supported devices, such as your mobile app, but cannot do so through your Tesla.

A workaround you may want to try is connecting your Tesla to a Wi-Fi connection instead of your data package. With Wi-Fi, we will see your local network's IP address, which should show your physical location. However, you can only use Wi-Fi when your vehicle is in range of the network connection. If you want to override Tesla's IP address while driving, you can use a mobile hotspot. After connecting to your hotspot, select "Remain Connected in Drive" if you want to keep the connection active while you are driving.

PLEASE NOTE: using a mobile hotspot is subject to fees and restrictions of your carrier.
